The area around San Bruno, CA, had been inhabited for centuries by Ohlone Native Americans in a village named Urebure, after the the Spanish established San Francisco de Asis mission in 1776 the land was used for grazing cattle. It was in 1849 that it began as an American settlement. An inn called “Thorp’s Place” (and later called “Uncle Tom’s Cabin”) at the intersection of El Camino Real and Crystal Springs Avenue, was used as a stagecoach stop (called Clark’s Station) by the famous Butterfield stagecoach route. By the 1860’s a train station was built, and in 1875 San Bruno, CA’s first post office was established.
San Bruno, CA, as with most other cities in the bay area, saw real growth and development after the San Francisco 1906 Earthquake and Fire. Schools were built, roads were paved, and in 1927 the “Mills Field Municipal Airport” (the name was changed to “San Francisco Municipal Airport” in 1931, and finally as the “San Francisco International Airport in 1955”) opened.
